“When you take care of things, they last longer and serve you better.”
That idea motivated Andrew Shears, a student of Memorial's Business Faculty, to start up an enterprise in the StudentWorks program in 2020. “Wind, rain, snow, and even sun - Newfoundland weather takes a toll on your home. Investing in maintenance protects your property and saves time and money in the long run.”
Now in its second year, Window and Eaves Cleaning takes on a variety of exterior house cleaning projects: windows (interior and exterior), pressure washing vinyl siding, eavestrough cleaning, soffit cleaning, gutter guard installation, and other household maintenance tasks. Window and Eaves Cleaning takes a personal and professional approach that starts with an onsite visit and free estimate and special promo - 10% off project total for booking at time of estimate.
Window and Eaves Cleaning is 'brothers in business'. Andrew takes care of business, and younger brother Ian, also a business student at Memorial, manages production. Both brothers grew up playing team sports, so the team approach comes easily.
The team is crewed by students. All crew members complete extensive industry-based Safety Training, are covered by Workers Compensation coverage and $5,000,000 Liability Insurance Coverage. Andrew says, "The more work we book, the more students we can hire. That's good news because the pandemic has reduced student job opportunities in the service sector."
On the scheduled day, the crew of skilled and energetic students shows up with all the gear needed to get the job done. They set up, work efficiently, do quality inspection, clean up, and they're off to the next job. The company services St. John’s West, Mount Pearl, Paradise, Conception Bay South and environs.
Community is part of the program. A portion of the proceeds from each job goes to support Multiple Sclerosis research, and each year the crews have a Car Wash for MS, with 100% of the proceeds going to to the cause.
Andrew says it’s a great way to earn, learn and have a great summer. “Being outdoors, working as part of a team, doing something that you can instantly see the results, and making homeowners happy is gratifying for all of us. And the car wash is always a lot of fun.”
StudentWorks is a national program that helps students start-up companies that will employ students, build professional business skills, and serve the community.
