When William L Chafe started his tailoring business in downtown St. John’s back in 1929, Newfoundland was still a country. little did he know that it would be still going strong 90 years later, having evolved into a large menswear store owned first by his son, and now his grandsons - Derek and Roger Chafe.
To this day Chafe and Sons remain a staple of downtown. while still providing tailoring services and custom suits, the store now carries all sorts of menswear including more casual styles like sports jackets, pants and outerwear. the walls are lined with all sorts of hats from bowler hats and top hats to fedoras. they’ve also branched into carrying uniforms.
No matter the possibilities for expansion, Derek is not interested in leaving downtown. knowing that people associate his store with downtown, he says, “you almost become part of the furniture”. Chafe and Sons have built a loyal clientele downtown that relies on their fashion sense, expertise, and friendly customer service.
Derek says that because Chafe and Sons is a family business, the customers are treated like family as well. customers can always count on Derek’s warm and friendly demeanour when they visit the store. never having hired outside the family, the Chafes have been growing their business for almost 100 years now and are excited for what’s to come.
