in 2012 Matthew Finateri started baking muffins and cookies for a local coffee shop, and they were a hit.
from there, Tulip Baroo was born. in 2018 he opened the sweet vegan and gluten-friendly boutique storefront on Harvey Road. another hit! people can walk right in and choose the beautiful cupcakes and cookies from the case and sit down to enjoy with a coffee or tea.
Matthew chose to make vegan treats as an extension of his own largely plant-based diet. when he worked as a server, he noticed an increase in requests for gluten-free meals, so he set up shop to meet the growing need for baked goods for special diets. design is one of the special elements of Tulip Baroo. the swirls, colours, and special touches come from Matthew’s imagination, as do the unique flavours - like vanilla rose water. and only at Tulip Baroo will you find a cupcake named after the iconic Dorothy Zbornak (from the Golden Girls!)
Matthew has fun experimenting with different ideas. and in the spirit of the environment, Matthew recycles everything he can. Matthew’s background is not what you would expect - he is actually a sound engineer by training. but he has loved baking ever since he was a kid, and he has always loved eating sweet treats. he is proud to own a small business, and though Ontario-born he has adopted Newfoundland and Labrador as his home. he was drawn in by the people, the culture, and the sense of community. for him, Newfoundland was the perfect place to make a life, and to make cupcakes.
