A special kind of energy pulses in Best Kind Productions. it could be the vulnerability and risk the company takes in creating and producing original and/or offbeat works, it could be the energy of kids who magically – miraculously – own their spotlight even when it’s their first time to lead, or it could be the way the company empowers creativity in actors, musicians, designers and stagehands to tell the story. and the stories are something to tell!

It was the Arts & Culture Centre Barbara Barrett's theatre production of a Broadway musical that brought Best Kind co-founders Kyle McDavid and Timothy Matson together. with a BA in music from Mount Allison University and an Education degree from Western University, Kyle arrived in St. John’s in 2010, where he met Timothy Matson who has a Masters's in musical theatre from NYU.

Timothy had just moved to the province from North Carolina, and the two CFAs pulled together a fantastic production. this was not a small thing. St. John’s has a beautiful, rich and diverse theatre community, and one year its patrons were happy to support two productions of Annie by two theatre companies, not two months apart, so the rough-riding show was a bit of a tact change. it worked, and Kyle and Timothy went on to produce mainstage shows, kid musicals, a cabaret series and original works. Best Kind brings a little something different to the performing arts community.

the Cabaret series

Best Kind mainstage musicals have included Fun Home, Next to Normal, Urinetown, 13, Avenue Q and Spelling Bee. mainstage shows are usually produced at the LSPU Hall. Best Kind’s Cabaret series takes place every so often and slips a little bit of up close and personal courage to the mix. the Cabaret is a venue for local musical and theatre types to perform musical theatre and popular songs from decades past present and future – and it’s also a staging ground for first readings of original works. the Cabaret series takes place at cool little venues around the downtown.

kid musicals

The ‘kid musicals’ are a staple for Best Kind. live in August from Bowring Park, the kid musicals are a summer highlight and a brilliant way for young thespians to learn the craft. then there is the original side of Best Kind. they produce original works that capture people and places and ideas that have not been captured before – like Kyle’s ‘Impresario’ a musical based on the life of Newfoundlander and Broadway performer John Murray Anderson. And there is always something new, something different the community, and serve as another way of contributing to the artistic landscape of this place.
