fostering problem solving and innovation

“Food security is a world problem, and people have amazing ideas on how to address it,” says Jon Butler, founder of Get Started Café, “and when you connect the right idea with the right person, you’re on track to make change for the better.”

Connecting people and change-making ideas is the business of Get Started Café. it’s a concept company that offers a professional development boot camp designed to collaboratively share ideas, and develop practical skills in creativity, teamwork, problem solving, design thinking, and storytelling as participants work to tackle challenges. an engineer by trade (Memorial, Mechanical, ’09) Jon saw immeasurable value in connecting people through shared ideas while working in the IT sector in Ontario.  when he came across the UN’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development, he recognized ‘Food Security’ as a major challenge for Newfoundland and Labrador, and one he wanted to tackle with like-minded individuals.

He came home to start Get Started Café. Get Started Café Boot Camps are four session programs that engage participants to choose an idea to work on and a team to work with.  the teams progress the ideas through four phases - start with Start, Focus, Shape, and Compel, so participants emerge charged up and well-equipped to progress making the idea an actionable project. the intent is that Get Started Café will draw young professionals and students along with stakeholders and recruiters interested in developing creative and innovative solutions to food insecurity in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Jon aims to keep connecting people through shared ideas not just here in Newfoundland and Labrador but eventually, all around the world because “we can’t live in a good society if we’re not doing good things for society.”
