Newfoundland artist Eileen Balsom Matthews of NERRL Hand Painted Designs is well-known for painting the iconic stages of New Perlican on glassware, and she also leaves her mark on Newfoundland slate.
Slate is a sedimentary rock ranging from 150 million to 500 million years old. Newfoundland slate deposits are among the oldest in the world. The pieces that wind up in Eileen’s studio emerge as beautiful address signs, welcome signs, and family signs that welcome and charm all who see them.
Eileen says "each is a hand-painted original."
We got the Inside Scoop, live with Eileen at her studio on Tory Road, New Perlican in the fall of 2022.
Trade Secret: Elieen says the trick to having slate paintings last for years is the sealing. Eileen preps all her slate art to withstand the outdoor environment for years and years and years. Some of the slate work displayed at the NERRL studio deck has been there for 20 years.
